In the late 1980s, the fall of the Berlin Wall marked a transformative moment, symbolising the end of the Cold War and the reunification of East and West Germany. Historically, it was perhaps the most significant border to ever fall. Three decades later, however, the world is witnessing a surprising surge in the construction of physical walls, with the number increasing from six in 1989 to at least 63 worldwide. To truly understand the impact of these barriers and achieve a borderless perspective, designer Shanon Poupard argues that we might need to cross a barrier personally. This is the message behind her design project, with repeated images referencing the crossing of barriers, knitted into her garment.
